I still use the T/A keychain I received as part of Secret Senna a few years back!
I lose my keys all the time and decided I should do something about it. I decided to develop my welding skills a bit and made a key holder out of some bar stock and vintage parts!
I don’t have a before image of the valve cover I used, but here is one from the same pile. My father pulled a handful of valve cover sets off junkyard late-50s and 60s Chevy 283s and 327s sometime back in the 80s and they’d been sitting around for the last 40 years waiting to be used.
First was to strip the years of rust and any original paint back down to the metal. The cover was in surprisingly good shape with just some dents on sides. Nothing a body hammer and some finishing putty couldn’t fix.
Filler primed to take care of any small corrosion defects I didn’t take care of with putty. It was then sprayed orange as you see in the first photo
To make a key bracket
I cut up this .75
x .125
bar stock and glued it together...
very ugly welds but nobody will see them and keys aren’t exactly heavy. Tacked some nuts on to allow bolting the valve cover in place.
I then bent the brackets into shape and drilled some holes big enough for spark plugs, welded the plugs in place, and sprayed everything satin black . These plugs were NOS from the 70s or 80s .

Woah, that is amazing! I love the idea! The spark plugs as hooks was a nice touch.

That is awesome. I wish I had a welder so I could make one of these for my dad.

I love this! Great job.
I bet if you made these out of the remaining valve covers you could sell them.

That’s very handsome , you did a great job.
To be honest, I think that the value of having a key rack or key bowl should be taught in school. You’ll never lose your keys, because where else could they be? Same for wallet, watch, etc - have a bowl/plate/box where you always place them when you walk in. After a week or two, it’s habit, and you never search for them again.
I think I was in my early 30s when I finally figured this all out!

Neat!
I might have to steal that idea.

I need to get in the habit of using the key rack now, it’s so tempting just to throw everything on the counter or nearest flat surface as I’m so lazy.

You’d think. I still manage to sometimes drop the keys off in random places, only now I don’t even know where to start looking because mentally my only option is the bowl.
(Although about half the time they aren’t in the bowl it’s because they’re still in the deadbolt)

Ha, thanks! I’m sure the labor cost would exceed any what people are willing to pay though!

Boilermakers and Hoosiers in the same house?

That’s awesome. I may copy this idea with an old 300zx valve cover I have. I’ve been thinking lately that I need a key rack. Having 3 sets of keys makes things complicated

This is good Oppo. Looks very nice!

You’d be surprised. If you just clear coated what ever patina is one them you’d save a lot of time and probably sell them faster lol

Do it! A V6 cover should fit three sets fine I would imagine?

Football and basketball seasons are rough to say the least.

Ha ha ha! I’ve used the deadbolt as key storage more than once...

The trick is consistency. If you use the same spot every time, that’s ok, too . I use our device charging dock as the reference point for my wallet and watch.
Just don’t pick a spot where they’re in the way later and will get moved, because then you're toast.

Might not even need to go that far.

A few years ago I search for like an hour for my keys. Only to find them in the key whole of my car door.

That is awesome!

Changing the subject, one of my favorite things about the van is now I can run with a physical metal key again and not have to lug some ten pound car fob around the trails.

That’s a very cool idea. It’s a money maker, if you wanted to make batches and sell them at swap meets. If we ever have swap meets agai n.

I do that with the BMW. Take the little door key out of the fob, and lock the fob in the car. It doesn’t have keyless entry so it won’t open just cuz the fob is there.

Very cool!
I’m currently looking for a key holder - and now I know that I’ll never be satisfied with anything less than this magnificent creation. :-)
